Diet And Dental Health

Diet And Dental HealthOral health is a pointer to the state of your overall well-being. Good nutrition impacts your dental health significantly.

Fish and dairy products

Dairy products are high in vitamin K. These products include cheese, yogurt, and butter among others. Fish has a high concentration of omega-3 components and vitamin D. A combination of vitamin D, A, and K2 works well to supply calcium to the teeth. Calcium is largely responsible for strengthening the enamel. When the enamel is sufficiently mineralized, it is able to withstand acidic and bacterial attacks in the mouth. Omega-3 facilitates the growth of healthy gums. As a result, it is a great defense mechanism for reducing or preventing periodontitis. If you notice that you bleed frequently when flossing or brushing, you may need to consider increasing your omega-3 intake. Salmon, trout, and tuna are some of the fish that have the highest omega-3 concentrations.

Greens and vegetables

Greens are probiotic in nature. They provide nutrients that healthy bacteria in the mouth can feed on. The oral cavity has both healthy and harmful bacteria. Leafy greens have a high-water content that leaves the mouth feeling clean and fresh. With greens and vegetables, you are certain to get a healthy oral microbiome in the oral cavity. Greens have a high mineral content. Good examples of healthy greens are arugula, kale, turnip, spinach, and Swiss chard.

Limit the sugar intake

Processed foods and fizzy beverages are a great enemy for healthy teeth and gums. Snacks such as crackers have a high carbohydrate concentration. The carbohydrate is broken down very fast in the mouth to sugar. Sugar is the ideal component for harmful pathogenic bacteria to thrive on. As the bacteria feed on the sugars in the mouth, it releases an acid that erodes the enamel with time. Weak enamel may not resist tooth decay and plaque buildup. Sodas and other fizzy beverages have a PH scale of between 2 and 3 which is highly acidic.
