Nearly 70 percent of all adults will get gum disease during their lives, especially as they grow closer to retirement age. While the minor stages of gum disease can be cured, if you have moderate or severe gum disease, you may need additional treatment to keep your gum disease in remission. One of those treatments is called scaling and root planing. Here is some additional information about caring for your teeth and gums at home after a deep gum cleaning.
What Is Involved in a Deep Gum Cleaning?
When you are battling gum disease, it is vitally important to clean out plaque and tartar both above and below the gum line. To get your gum tissue as clean as possible, our dentist will use a dental scaler, a machine that uses vibrations to get rid of excess plaque and tartar. It is important to get your teeth and gums as clean as possible so that you can continue to fight the infection in your gums or gum disease.
How to Care for Your Teeth
First, you need to be aware that your teeth and gums will be sensitive after the deep gum cleaning. You need to be gentle with your mouth for a few days. Do not eat overly hot or overly cold foods because this can irritate your teeth and gums. Instead, try eating soft, room-temperature foods and drinking beverages at room temperature. Also, avoid any hard food, such as chips, popcorn, and nuts.
Also, because of the sugars and acids, your gums will be sensitive to any overly sweet or salty foods. Try to eat foods that are starchy rather than sweet.
When you are brushing and flossing your teeth, be aware that you might experience some bleeding for two or three days, but the bleeding should be minor. If you think you are bleeding too much, be sure to call our office.
