A glass of milk being pouredCalcium and vitamin D are key for the growth, strength, and health of your teeth. In fact, it is impossible to have healthy teeth without both of these nutrients. Calcium and vitamin D are responsible for keeping your tooth enamel and dentin hard and aiding in their growth. So, if vitamin D and calcium are so important, how will you know that you are getting enough of both to ensure your teeth are strong and healthy? Here are some tips for making sure you are getting vitamin D and calcium in your diet.

Physical Signs You May Not Be Getting Enough Calcium and Vitamin D

One of the largest indicators you are not getting enough vitamins and nutrients to ensure healthy teeth is in your teeth themselves. You may notice you are getting cavities more frequently, especially if you are continuing to practice good dental hygiene. Also, you may have irritated gums that are red, swollen, or bleeding. Your teeth may be brittle, and they may also be loose due to weak tooth roots.

Other physical signs of a calcium and vitamin D deficiency can include bone pain, lines in your fingernails and toenails, and muscle weakness. You may suffer from hair loss as well.

Foods That Contain Calcium and Vitamin D

Luckily, if you have a vitamin deficiency of calcium or vitamin D, there are plenty of foods that contain both. First, all dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, and cheese, contain vitamin D and calcium. If you do not consume dairy, you can substitute plant-based milk products, such as soy or almond products, which will still give you the nutrition you need.

Other foods that contain vitamin D and calcium include nuts, dark green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli, and seeds such as chia, sesame, and sunflower. You can also try tahini and hummus.
