Your Diet Can Harm Your Teeth

Posted on 3/21/2022 by Evan
Your Diet Can Harm Your TeethNowadays there seems to be a diet for everything. Several of today's hottest diets are so mainstream that they appear on the menus of almost every restaurant and fine dining establishment. Even at the grocery store, you can find gluten-free bread and flour substitutes in the baking section. Diet products have become a part of our daily lives because of their high demand. There are around 45 million Americans who diet every year, which is much more convenient and accessible than ever. While diet foods may help you lose weight, some of them can also be problematic for your oral health.

Juice Diets and Sparkling Water

Dieting with juice cleanses is becoming increasingly popular. Juices and water are the only things you can consume during this period. There isn't much evidence to suggest juice cleansing is good for your health, but we do know it can adversely affect your oral health. That's because fruit is naturally high in sugar. This sugar gets converted into acid by the bacteria in your mouth when it is consumed. Tooth decay can result from this acid. People who want to cut down on sugary drinks are turning to carbonated water as an alternative. Since carbonated water has less sugar than regular soda, this is a good idea in theory. It's all in the details, though. When you remove sugar from the equation, you still have carbonation to contend with. It is this carbonation that causes enamel erosion.

Keto Diets and Intermittent Fasting

Among the more popular diets today is the keto diet. Throughout the day, you only consume around 50 grams of carbohydrates. It's a low fat, high carb, and high protein diet. When you do this, your body enters a state known as ketosis. Your body starts to burn fat for fuel instead of carbs, which some believe can help you lose weight. If you follow the keto diet, you'll end up with bad breath when you enter ketosis. The body must expel ketones when it is in ketosis. Despite their bad smell, ketones are harmless. Diets that use intermittent fasting are among the more extreme diet options that have become popular. A diet like this allows you to lose weight by choosing specific fasting methods. Fasting can be done by a variety of different methods, but they can all negatively affect your teeth. People often become dehydrated when fasting, which can result in bad breath and tooth decay.
